Another IMG-1010 to Install

Well tomorrow we are installing another IMG-1010 for our termination in Hondutel. This will provide Worldwide Telecom customers another 24 E1’s of termination into my favorite Country in Central America. This will be a bit of a process, wiring up the 96 cables to the Hondutel DDF. Fun, Fun Fun.

I will be available on my cell - unfortunately that would NOT be the iPhone cuz they don’t offer any freakin service down here, or anywhere but the USA…

Cisco, EMC, Microsoft Team up

JULY 10, 2007 | WASHINGTON — Cisco® (NASDAQ: CSCO - message board), EMC® Corp. and Microsoft Corp. today announced the formation of an alliance of technology vendors that will offer one of the most comprehensive, security-enhanced, commercial, multi-vendor, end-to-end information-sharing technology architectures for helping protect and share sensitive government information.

Now that is cool - Cisco is Helping Microsoft mend their security issues directly… i know they are coming up with some really cool apps that will work with NAC (Network Access Control) and 802.1X. Really i am sure that once Cisco can integrate to the desktop with Microsoft that will be a powerful solution. Maybe i should start selling Cisco again???

A MAC Story

Ok, So for the past 19 years i have been using IBM or “clone” computers. For the past couple of years it has been Sony Notebooks. All running Microsoft Windows with different flavors, lately Vista. I ordered a few MAC computers recently and i just wanted to comment on that world. The “MAC” experience. At first i was playing with the MAC’s because if i really needed to gat anything done i would use my Vista computer. But i cannot tell you how much i like my MAC’s, it takes a little getting used to, but these computer are awesome. As i am writing this i have a Sony Vaio Notebook (Core Duo) with a Sony 23″ Monitor that are both off and have beem most of the past 2 weeks. Why, because i can do anything i did with the MAC plus i get the great interface of OS X and Office for the MAC but mainly because it’s core is unix. I can connect to my Linux boxes natively, run most linux apps, and if i need to use parallels to open a Vista session and run any Windows program as if it was native on the MAC. Apps. like SSH, SCP, SFTP FTP all from the terminal. Need a firewall run ipchains, need to connect to a windows “share” run samba. And the really cool thing is that because it is based on UNIX / LINUX the whole world is developing apps. for me - free. This OS X is really cool. Of course there are always little things that i wish MAC did better like, integration with Microsoft Exchange, Technical drawing with Visio, Netformx has a great tool for Designing Cisco networks to the component level and then printing a BOM (Great tool)… but there is always parallels for that. And the MAC’s are secure, stable and getting better. Apple as a company is kicking some butt, rolling out new products almost every few months. Rather impressive, although if you would have told me that i was going to be a MAC user last year i would have laughed in your face… but now i gota say it “I Love my MAC”.

In any case - these computers are very cool and i would recommend them to anyone. Linux Domain with a mix of MAC and Linux clients. Great replacement for Windows…

Cantata’s Gateway Solution is a Winner!

I have been a Cisco partner for the past 8 years and now i am managing a Telco. In my experience if you would have asked me about E1 Gateways and SS7 interconnects i would have suggested Cisco… When i designed our network i made the decision to move with Cantata, mostly based on pricing. But i am NOT sorry about the decision. Cantata’s products are solid and their support is outstanding. Their team is almost an addition to our staff. Pinpointing issues with VoIP interconnects can be difficult. Taking wireshark cap’s on each leg of the call and diagnosing issues can sometimes be a pain in the @*$% (it would be great if wireshark worked with SS7). But Cantata’s support team has gone the extra mile to help resolve issues… I can almost always get in contact with an engineer, with one phone call, to connect to our equipment and provide support. I have to give them a 5 * review…

WTS Opening route to Asia

We will be opening routs to the Philippines within the next 90 days of so… We will be installing 6 DS3’s to handle about 70 million minutes monthly. This is an exciting addition for WTS as we are augmenting our direct routes worldwide. We are in the process of ordering the Cisco and Cantata equipment now…

Security in the Wholesale VoIP market

I was talking to one of our customers last week and they were having problems with their network. They had a DoS attack going on and it was really affecting their business. I asked their engineer how the ACL was setup on their core routers, the reply was we have no ACL…
The thing is, if i were to ask our softswitch provider about ACL’s they would say “you don’t need ACL’s our softswitch has a sophisticated firewall. Ok, the switch has a firewall but what about your other servers? And why leave your network open to the possibility of attack? I believe the minimum one can do is only open your network to your customers network and then only to Signaling and Media IP’s and ports. If there are other services you need to access then proxy them on a firewalled box to specific IP’s. I am not saying that we have our network setup perfectly but i believe that there are many companies operating out there without the proper security measures in place to protect their networks. On an average i see thousands of foiled attempts daily on our network. It might be one blocked icmp paket… But if you are not capturing the access-list violations in a syslog server you would never know… If there are any really good products designed for VoIP with security in mind i for one am interested in knowing about it.

Nextone 4.3 upgrade

We will be upgrading our Nextone switches this month and i am excited. The new software is full of new features in the MSX and the RSM (iVMS). This will help up continue to provide excellent service to our customers. I, for one, am very impressed with the Nextone solution and advocate it to all our customers. I know i sound like a commercial, but really, they are great…

iPhone in central america

So Apple finally released the iPhone, of course it is only available in the USA with ATT service. It seems that there are some folks dedicated to hacking the iPhone and making it available to the world. I wish them luck. It will make the device more interesting if there is a “rogue” version out there… plus it would be great to use the phone in Honduras where i live. But i don’t believe it will be easy to do, between Apple and ATT i bet they have it locked down… but there is always hope, i always say one mans lock is another man’s key. I don’t think the Central American iPhone release date was published anywhere on the near horizon, although if Latin America does get the iPhone it would probably be with American Movil as they have coverage in most of Latin America, if they agree to the “special” terms from Apple. ATT might frown on this “hacking iPhone” but i don’t think it would really cost them much business as most of the users would be connecting in other countries where, as of now there, Apple has no agreements. It sorta sucks that Apple released this great new product, but only included the US market. And the release dated for other countries are next year. It would have been much better if they did a world wide release, much more impressive.

wts - honduras route

So it seems that the rates to hondo proper and fixed markets are finally stabilizing a bit. For a while there it seemed that the rates were like a lucrative wall-street stock. WTS is very active in the hondo telco industry if you have any posts regarding the Honduras telco market please let me know…
